FAQs

Periodontal disease, better known as gum disease, is the degradation of gum tissue and infection caused by harmful bacteria. Gum disease is the result of bacteria buildup between the teeth and gums. This harmful bacteria is found in plaque.

The main cause of Gum disease is the constant accumulation of plaque and bacteria around the teeth. If the bacteria and plaque are not removed with brushing, flossing and professional dental cleanings, they produce toxins which cause bleeding and swelling of the gums; the gums begin to detach from the tooth creating a pocket. If the bacteria is left in the pocket, this can destroy the bone and eventually cause pain, mobility and tooth loss.
