Additional Information

The Importance of Regular Dental Check-Ups

Our job is to show you what we see in your mouth, educate you on your options, and let you make the best decision for yourself. We never push unnecessary treatments and always give you options.
  • Plaque, tartar, and cavities that might have formed since your last visit. Plaque can solidify, turning into tartar and becoming difficult to remove on your own. Additionally, your hygienist will be looking at all surfaces of every tooth, ensuring no cavities have appeared since your last visit.
  • Oral cancer. We are trained to recognize the signs and symptoms in all stages of oral cancer. The earlier it is caught, the more treatable it is. We will check for any abnormalities at your regular checkup.
  • Periodontal disease or “gum disease” that may have progressed in between visits. Your gums are what keep your teeth in place and if they have an infection or recession starting, no matter how strong your teeth are, they are at risk. Your hygienist will check your gums and make sure they are strong.
  • Check on any bad habits. This means anything that might cause dental issues, including grinding, chewing ice, smoking, chewing tobacco, and eating sticky candies.

The Importance of Regular Dental Check-Ups

When you come in for a routine teeth cleaning, your hygienist will clean and polish all surfaces of your teeth and any dental work you have had done. Following the polishing, your hygienist will floss between each tooth to make sure that the spaces and gums between your teeth are clean. We use an advanced ultrasonic water scaler to give you a more relaxing and pain-free way to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from your teeth. This process will remove harmful bacteria that are not accessible with your toothbrush or dental floss.
Your hygienist will also measure the pockets around each tooth to make sure that your gums are healthy and look for any signs of periodontal (gum) disease. The hygienist will also look for cavities or any other concerns that should be addressed by the dentist and take any x-rays that might be needed for both routine and problem-focused care. X-rays can reveal cavities that might have formed in between teeth or in areas that are not visible to the naked eye.
Your dental hygienist will also review your homecare or any habits that might be damaging to your oral health to ensure that your teeth are being well taken care of outside of the dental chair.

How Often Should You go to the Dentist

The typical dental patient is recommended to visit the dentist twice a year for cleanings, but in some cases you might need to be seen more often. Patients who suffer from periodontal disease often need to visit the hygienist more often to keep the disease at bay and help keep your mouth as healthy as possible. Even with great homecare, your oral health can change in between visits.
Having preventative care will mean that any new concerns can be handled when they first appear, rather than waiting until they are causing a problem or pain. In between your routine cleanings, you should come in for an appointment should you have any new concerns that have appeared. If you wait until your next appointment, your small concern could have turned into a bigger problem. It is always better to catch a dental problem as early as possible.
Your dentist can also check for unseen abnormalities that could be a sign of other concerns, including health issues. Oral issues can progress quickly if they are not noticed right away. Keeping on top of your dental cleanings, you might be able to prevent potential oral health concerns.

How Preventive Dentistry Keeps Teeth Clean and Healthy

The goal of preventative dentistry is to care for your teeth and keep them as healthy as possible. In preventative care, your dentist and hygienist will look for signs of cavities, periodontal disease, chips, and enamel wear. Your homecare is also a form of preventative dentistry and is your first line of defense against dental concerns or issues. Preventative care at home includes brushing twice a day, with an electric brush if possible, and flossing at least once a day. Homecare will remove any plaque that has built up through the day before it hardens and becomes a bigger concern.
At your preventative dental appointment, we will remove the plaque buildup on your teeth. Plaque is that white film that appears over your teeth after eating. If it isn’t removed regularly, it will begin to harm your teeth and can, over time, harm your body as well. Removing the built-up tartar and plaque before it is a concern will maintain the strength of your teeth and your health. You can prevent the production of plaque by maintaining a low-sugar diet that is rich in vegetables. The natural bacteria in your mouth are less attracted to vegetables, keeping plaque from adhering to your teeth.

What Are No Drill Fillings

Having cavities filled is one of the most common fears that prevent people from visiting the dentist. We like to help our patients maintain their dental health by providing pain free fillings that are done without the use of injections or a drill. This conservative technique uses Micro Air Abrasion and Hard Tissue Lasers that will only remove the damaged area of the tooth, keeping all of the healthy tooth structure. While this type of filling is not available for all types of decay, it is a good choice for pit and groove cavities that are on the surface of the tooth. If a cavity is caught early in development, the no drill filling might be an option for you. For more extensive cavities, the no drill option would not be ideal.
Our goal is to help you maintain your oral health in the most comfortable and painless way possible. The no drill option will mean that you will not have to have a numb mouth for the remainder of your day, allowing you to keep your normal schedule. Going to the dentist should not be a cause for fear or concern and we would like to keep it as comfortable as possible for all of our patients.

Bad Breath Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be embarrassing. But if you suffer from bad breath, you are not alone. In fact, nearly 60% of the population deals with this uncomfortable issue. Halitosis can be caused by many things, including medical conditions, poor dental hygiene, gum disease, and the breakdown of bacteria in your mouth.
The origin of your bad breath can be discovered with the help of your dentist. Going through your medical and oral history and habits, we can help you figure out why you are suffering from halitosis and how we should treat it. Prior to your assessment with us, you can ensure that you are eating a healthy diet and doing proper dental homecare to be sure that your halitosis problem is not strictly related to diet.
Your dentist or hygienist can go over an assessment with you in order to discover what the cause of your bad breath is. We will create a customized treatment plan to help eliminate your bad breath. The plan can include a professional cleaning with the hygienist, laser sterilization, and review of home care as well as options of treatment you can do at home.

A professional “cleaning” removes harmful bacteria from below your gums which are not accessible with a toothbrush or floss. These germs have been scientifically shown to cause Periodontal (Gum) Disease and other diseases in the body if left unchecked.

How can I prevent gum or periodontal disease?

The best way you can care for your teeth at home is to brush with a good manual or electric toothbrush at least twice a day for 2-3 minutes, and floss at least once a day. Cosmetic and General Dentistry requires a special home care commitment for the longevity of the patient’s teeth and gums. This program prevents bad breath, Periodontal (Gum) disease, bone loss, and maintains existing dental work. There is ample evidence that supports the link between Periodontal disease to Heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, and certain cancers. Bleeding and inflamed gums may be an indication that other serious conditions are occurring with the overall health of the patient.

During your hygiene visit, your hygienist will thoroughly clean all surfaces of your teeth, veneers, and crowns using an advanced ultrasonic water scaler. The ultrasonic scaler is a very comfortable and relaxing way for removing plaque, tartar and stains from above and below your gum line. The hygienist will carefully examine your head, neck, teeth and gums for any signs of decay, Periodontal (Gum) disease and any other concerns.
