What Happens During a Teeth Cleaning session:

To have your teeth cleaned professionally you should visit your trusted Vancouver dentist. It is advised to have the process done twice a year for the best results, and prevention of dental damage. Having your teeth cleaned might save you on future visits to your dentist. Having your teeth cleaned professionally every six months is just as important as brushing and flossing every day.

The process of a professional clean is not painful at all. Most people are worried about seeing their dentist, and might feel the same about their Dental Hygienist, but there really is no need.

The process won’t take that long, here are the steps your Dental Hygienist will follow, so that you know exactly what to expect:

teeth cleaning

1. First of all your Dental Hygienist will check the condition of your mouth by starting with a thorough visual inspection. X-rays might be taken.

2. Next your gums will be checked for signs of gingivitis by gently poking and probing the gums to determine if any blood appears. It won’t cause any pain, as the poking is very gentle and will be experienced as a feeling of pressure being applied.

3. A process of thorough flossing will follow. Any food particles or plaque between your teeth will be removed meticulously. Places that are particularly difficult to reach with a toothbrush will be properly cleaned.

4. For the next part of the professional cleaning session the ultrasonic tool is used to clean your teeth. The instrument rotates and vibrates to loosen, tartar, plaque, and bits of food. Debris will be rinsed off continuously by water being sprayed on the teeth, and a suction tube placed in the mouth will remove the spray.

5. Your teeth will be scaled next by using a fine curved sharp tipped instrument. Your Dental Hygienist will clean every tooth individually by scrapping off build-up of tartar and plaque. The front and back of each tooth will be scaled. The pressure applied to get the tougher bits off might feel strange but will cause no pain.

6. The next step is to polish the teeth, as scaling might leave the teeth looking dull. A special tool with a rubber end looking like a cup in which the polish is placed is used. The cup is rotated across the surface of each tooth making it shiny again.

7. Lastly your teeth will be treated with fluoride to protect the enamel from damage by cavity forming bacteria. The fluoride is left on the teeth for about a minute, and then removed by using the rinsing and suction tools. It is best not to swallow the fluoride.

You will be reminded not to eat or drink for approximately 30 minutes after the fluoride treatment. Usually your next appointment with your dentist will then be booked.

Enjoy the wonderful feeling of squeaky-clean teeth and a radiant smile. You will feel the difference after you have been for a professional teeth-cleaning session with your Dental Hygienist.
