Brush Your Teeth for Your Heart

Brush Your Teeth for Your Heart Oral Hygiene

We have all heard about the benefits of going to the gym and cutting down on fats and sugars to decrease our risk of heart attacks and strokes; but have you heard of decreasing the risk of heart disease by looking after your gums?

Studies have shown a strong link between cardiovascular disease and gum disease. The same bacteria that causes gum disease has also been found in arterial plaque that contributes to heart attacks and strokes.  Many people do not realize that bacteria grows at least 3mm under the gum line, and a toothbrush and floss only reach about 1-2 mm under the gums. This means that there are bacteria being missed everyday that can cause deep gum infections. Therefore it is important to visit your Dental professionals for deep cleanings at least twice a year. Below are some tips and easy steps you can take to achieve healthier gums and a healthier heart!

1)    Brush thoroughly and gently along your gum line for 2 minutes, 2-3 times per day

2)    Brush your tongue at least 1 time per day

3)    Floss every 24 hours, anytime of the day!

4)    Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash, such as Breath Rx 1 time per day

5)    See your Dental Hygienist & Dentist at least 2 times per year for a thorough cleaning under the gums
